About Us

Who is Honest Dog?

Honest Dog Training Company is co-owned by John W. Moore and his wife, Kara. As head trainer, John brings years of hands-on experience in canine behavior and animal sciences. A graduate of the University of Missouri–Kansas City with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, John has worked professionally with animals since 2014, including in veterinary medicine, preclinical research, and behavioral sciences, before dedicating his career fully to canine behavior.

Kara supports the business on the marketing and operations side, drawing on her journalism degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia and more than a decade of digital marketing experience.

John and Kara are proud parents to their daughter, Charlotte. Together, they make up the happy humans behind their well-loved rescue dogs, Millie and Tate, a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is rooted in helping owners build confident, communicative, and honest relationships with their dogs. The foundation for understanding animal behavior begins with a scientific approach, and we believe balanced training provides the structure dogs need while keeping sessions engaging, rewarding, and tailored to each individual animal. Training can be both fun and challenging, and it should always strive to be a positive and productive experience for everyone involved.

We are also committed to supporting our local rescue community. Whenever possible, we partner with Kansas City area shelters to help increase the adoptability of rescue dogs and set them — and their future families — up for long-term success. The right match matters, and skilled guidance can make all the difference in preparing owners to feel capable, informed, and ready for anything.

Importantly, your dog’s behavior in the home and out can differ greatly. That’s why Honest Dog Training Company comes to you, offering in-home training and behavioral services that help us to better understand root causes and context of your dog’s behavior. We work with you and your family outside the home as needed, too, and frequently work in public parks, hiking trails, or other grassy areas safe for quality training exercises.

In order to help keep costs manageable, we make house calls to the greater Kansas City metro and charge a small travel fee for those located outside our immediate service area. If you live in the Northland areas of Liberty, Gladstone, Smithville, Parkville, or Nashua, you’re likely within our immediate service area and won’t incur any travel fees.

Questions about how our philosophy affects our services? We always welcome a conversation should you wish to speak with us directly. Give us a call at (573) 353-2102 and let us help you begin communicating effectively with your dog today.
